How expensive is the gel, and will it make more than one project?
I am, looking for something to do with the girls, and they are way past the kid kit stage, but don't want to end up with huge $ investment (like when we took the cake deco class together and I now have 3 sets of wilton)

Besides the canvas and gel is there anything else special that we will need or can we use things we have in our stash? If there is anything special, can you post it so that I can pick things up this weekend when I go to the LSS?

I'm not sure on the pricing. Mon can answer that. But she will be selling 4oz. jars of it. I did several practice attempts experimenting and then my canvas itself (which is 12x24") and used almost the whole 4oz. It just depends on what size canvas and how big the sheet(s) is you're transferring (I transfered two 6x10" and one 10x10" pieces of paper). Does that make sense?
DangerMouse

That makes sense. thanks!

8 oz. jars of the gel medium run around $12-$15. I'm getting some 4 oz. jars to split up the medium to make it more economical for you and they will run around $6-$7.
I should have them up in the store this weekend.

I don't think the gel stuff is in yet? Is it?
And if you pm monica, she is really good about holding your order. She will wait on the gel if you ask.
ChickieShannon
06-04-2008, 02:03 PM
Sorry, girls! Mon and I are still trying to round up the jars to put the gel in. Seems they haven't been as easy to find as we thought. I picked up a couple last night and we're checking another place this evening.
And, yes, if you PM Monica, she can hold your other order and put your gel order in with it. :)

06-04-2008, 03:42 PM
I need to add that gel to my order!
Chickie - do you think you can do a few (3?) canvases with one 4 oz jar? Sorry if you answered this and I missed it!

Thanks. I am feeling icky and not paying enough attention!
I think I may need an 8oz if she used the full 4 oz. I want to transfer 8.5" squares onto maybe 3 or 4 canvases.

What's wrong, Bree?
ChickieShannon
06-04-2008, 04:22 PM
So you're wanting to transder three or four 8.5" squares? The 4 oz. may work but it might cut it close.
jessicabree
06-04-2008, 04:24 PM
I'll just go for the 8oz... I'm cool that way. 4oz isn't enough for me! Oh NO. When I play, I play for KEEPS. I take this SERIOUSLY!

Yes I would have! But it's already shipped. :)
I found some jars that I'll be putting together tomorrow and get them in the store. I was only going to offer the 4 oz. to make it more economical. How many of you think you might want the 8 oz. jar? I might need to order a couple more. They come quick though...they're usually here in a few days.

I will have to talk to my mom, but we are both planning on doing this project so we may need the 8 oz.

ChickieShannon

Unfortunately no. Pretty much the Freak store is about it. I haven't had any luck at HL, Michael's, or Jo-Ann. Maybe an art store if you have one local?

april
06-06-2008, 04:11 PM
Doesn't look like it just yet.
I didn't realize I would have to buy anything to do this class. $ is very tight, so since I am new, I need a little help. Where do I find this item in the store? What is shipping? Can I get it including shipping and tax for under $10?
Is the gel what we use to transfer the images onto the canvas?
moscrapper
06-08-2008, 01:37 PM
Shay I think if you get the 4 oz bottle 6.35 you should be ok cause shipping is 4.60 - ok so that's a little over $10

Here's the link to the gel medium in the store. It's $6.35 for a 4oz. jar. Shipping is $4.60. So it's just over $10.

Yes, I used the gel medium to transfer photocopies of my patterned paper to the canvas.
Let me know if you have any other questions! :)

Chickee, I got started and have a Q. It doesn't specify, but I assume that I allow the acrylic paint to dry before moving on to the next step of applying the paper w/gel?
april
06-25-2008, 02:30 PM
OH oh oh! This reminds me of my questions :)
Is it necessary to paint the canvas or can it be left as is?
Would leaving the gel on more than 20 minutes change the outcome of the transfer process?
I think the directions said decent amount, is it possible you can show us how thin/thick the layer of gel is we're supposed to put on a sample piece of paper? :D
:thankyou:

Honestly I haven't tried. You can experiment with different times to see.

The main thing is you want enough so that it doesn't dry before you put it down. I can see later if I can get a sample pic for you.
:)

Oh Chickee.... Oh Chickee... now my feelings are hurt... you answered all Aprils questions and not mine :pout:
and I have another q as well... to everyone.... did anyone else have issues getting a good color copy? I went to Office Max and lucky the nice boy said he would just do it for me, becuase it took about 10 trys to get a decent copy with many manipulations on his part of the machine.
april
06-25-2008, 05:08 PM
I *think* i got a good print... i gave the girl my card, and she told me what she could do, worked with the images and printed. It almost looks like photo paper - well I mean thicker than regular paper. THat's what I was envisioning.. regular copier paper. But this is thicker.
DangerMouse
06-25-2008, 05:11 PM
hhhmm, well, when everyone leave for thier activities for the night I am going to try this, although I need to locate the masking tape. I assume we have some somewhere, everyone does :)
april
06-25-2008, 05:14 PM
i just realized our masking tape is the thin stuff!! I'll be here for a while putting it on and then taking it off!! lol
april
06-25-2008, 05:14 PM
Question - when the tape is on holding down the image, does it dry completely within that time? or will it still be somewhat wet?
DangerMouse
06-25-2008, 05:16 PM
Mine is the thin stuff too (when I find it :)) but, my copy is only 6x10 or so, so it shouldn't be too bad.
april
06-25-2008, 05:22 PM
i think my canvas is 16 by 20... Is these come out good one of them will be going to my MIL :)

So sorry I missed your question!
Anyways, yes, the acrylic paint needs to dry before applying the gel. I'll go clarify that in my instructions. Thanks for asking!
I didn't have issues getting a good color copy. I just copied as is. Are you needing to resize when you copy?

Mine was slightly wet. Not gooey but not bone dry either.
april
06-25-2008, 05:45 PM
if it were completely dry, would you be able to still remove the paper easily enough with the spray bottle of water?
ChickieShannon
06-25-2008, 06:15 PM
Yep. :)
DangerMouse

No resizing, I kinda chopped up the paper to be the size I wanted and it was a straight copy, but the colors came out bad bad bad.... must have been thier machine.
I am getting ready to start, my canvas is primed and dry... wish me luck :)
april
06-25-2008, 06:51 PM

Diane, did you try it? How did it turn out?
april
06-26-2008, 04:07 PM
okay... last set of questions, I think!!! :giggle:
I put lotion on my arm to get an idea of how much to put. Can you tell me the closest to what you did?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/maiban/howmuch.jpg
and one more question -
would it be okay to put the gel onto the canvas, then put the picture and then burnish? think that could work? :D
ChickieShannon
06-26-2008, 05:26 PM
:giggle: Somewhere between the lightest to medium is good. You're so creative (and funny!)
You can put the gel on the canvas first but you might see a bit of the gel when it dries if it's outside the picture area. I prefer to put it on the paper/picture itself.
DangerMouse
06-26-2008, 05:29 PM
Diane, did you try it? How did it turn out?
I did not get to do it yet. DH had dead battery which meant I had to run everyone around rather than be at home by myself doing my project :) and today we went to six flags, so I have big plans for me and my canvas Friday

That brings ups another question then... do we need to be careful not to push teh gel beyond the edge of the pp when burnishing? or will the tape seal it enough to keep it in place?
april

heehee i had to find some way to get good idea oh how much to put! lol

I think I might just scrape off the excess if it come out from under the pic.

Mine went a little past the edge of the paper underneath the tape but it wasn't a big deal.
DangerMouse
06-26-2008, 05:45 PM
But won't the tape cover it at that point? I think the acrylic is dark enough that it won't show on this one, unless the gell dries drk or wierd color.
Oops... typing at same time... got yours Chickie... thanks!

I haven't tried it but I don't think it should be an issue.
ChickieShannon
06-27-2008, 01:16 PM
And just a reminder about this technique... it really isn't an exact science and every time will probably come out a tad different. So just experiment and see what you get. :)

06-27-2008, 01:22 PM
Thanks for answering my last questions!
I'm all taped up! Ready to start burnishing.

06-27-2008, 05:02 PM
The paper that the copy was made onto, was it thicker than regular printer paper?
april
06-28-2008, 02:26 PM
Chickie.. can you tell me how thick the paper was your print was on?
ChickieShannon
06-28-2008, 02:58 PM
Mine was normal copy paper.
april
06-28-2008, 02:59 PM
Maybe that's where I went wrong. I swear my fingernail was done, and then I lost a finger print trying to rub off that dang paper.
april

Chickie - where did you get the clips on yours - I like the idea of being able to change out the picture.
ChickieShannon
06-29-2008, 02:00 AM
I had them in my stash so I can't remember. But I would try an office supply store or Wal-Mart.
DangerMouse
06-30-2008, 08:27 AM
So, I did it this morning, and mixed results. I had enough transfer that I see what it is supposed to look like, but not enough to use the canvas. I am going to get the rest of the paper off and maybe sand it a little then try again, since I made 2 copies of the same pp.
My issue is the burnishing. It worked well on the edges where the canvas frame supported the rub, but the middle did not stick/transfer al all. And, I don't think I used enough gel.
april
06-30-2008, 09:04 AM
What I did was turned the canvas over to have it flat against the table and burnished. Other times I held it to where my left hand was behind the canvas while I used the bone folder to burnish.

Diane, it looks gorgeous!!! I think the distressed look turned out great! I actually prefer missing spots of PP to it all transferring. Great job!

 Thanks ladies. It was fun. Thanks for doing the class Shannon!
When I was working on my clipboard the other day my daughter wanted to know if I could transfer to the clipboard, or only to canvas.... she is full of ideas, but never wants to do them herself (she whimped on doing her own canvas) Have you tried it on anything other than canvas?
ChickieShannon
06-30-2008, 02:42 PM
I haven't tried anything but the canvas so I'm not sure. Let us know if y'all try it!
