In Photoshop, you can change the size of your image using two methods: Image Size and Canvas Size.

Image Size
Changing the Image Size will keep the entire image intact and make it larger/smaller. If you change a 12x12 image size to 6x6 it will shrink the entire image. It may sound silly but think Alice in Wonderland... she drank the potion and it shrunk her entire body. It didn't change her appearance, just made her smaller. Likewise for going larger (i.e. from 12x12 to 18x18). Be careful though going larger as you can lose image quality. Also make sure you have the box checked that says *Constrain Proportions*. This makes sure that when you change the size of one side, it will automatically adjust the other side so that it remains proportionate and doesn't get all skewed and oblong.

Examples

Notice how both images look the same, just different sizes.

Canvas Size
Changing the Canvas Size will trim or expand the area around the image. If you make the canvas size smaller, it will leave the image/pattern itself the same size but trim off the excess... much like cutting a piece of patterned paper. If you take a 12x12 piece of paper and want it 6x6 you would simply cut off 6 inches on each side. The pattern size itself doesn't change, just the size of the paper.

Notice how in both images the pattern size is still the same. It's just a matter of how much you can see in the second image.
